What do nurses do?
Nurses take charge of the health of patients, they also help to prevent disease and injury. The job of a nurse is very large, she can do different things dependent of her specialty.
What do nurses do on a typical day?
First, when you arrive at your department, you need to take the report of the last shift to give you an idea of the patient that you will take care during your day. After, you need to pass with your auxiliary nurse to say hello to each of your patients to have a better idea of their portrait. Then, you go back to your office and read the nurse's and the doctor's note of the last 24 hours to know what you need to survey during the day. You also need to read other notes if there are some specific aspects. After, you will evaluate each of your patients one by one while your auxiliary gives the medication. When you have finished your first round, you go back to your office and fill all the paper with your evaluation that you have made. You must check the blood work results. All of these will help you to review orders that you will need to execute during your shift. It is the same round in the afternoon. When you finished your shift, you told your report to the next staff so that they can take to charge patients.
Where do nurses work?
They can work everywhere, depend on their level of study. In general, we see most of the nurses in hospitals, but they can also work in schools, in clinics, in long-term facilities, in an office... If they have their baccalaureate, they can have their own clinics. In hospitals, there are so many specialties that a nurse can work. For example, they can be in a medicine department, in surgery, in obstetric-gynecological, in anesthetists, in psychiatric, in geriatrics, in pediatrics and many more.
How can I become a nurse?
To become a nurse, you have four options of programs. First, you can do a two-year program at college where you will learn theory and have hospital training. Secondly, you can do a diploma program which takes three years to complete, and it is given by a hospital or a school. Thirdly, you can do your bachelor or your master in a BSN program in four or five years at college and university where it will lead you to better working conditions and better choice of workplace. It is important to notice that if you want to practice as a nurse, you need to pass your national licensing exam. After you passed this exam, you would be registered as a nurse, and you will have the right to practice. Fourth, if you want to do some other specialties, you will need to do a doctorate in Nursing. You need to know that each state has their own codes, so if you want to become a nurse, you will need to inform yourself about the procedures.
How much money do nurses make?
The salary of a nurse depends on the state that they are working, their level of study, their field of working and many more aspects. Generally, the hourly rate increases over the years. The annual salary can vary between $30,000 and $120,000.
What kinds of additional training do nurses need?
If you want to have the highest managerial positions or to teach in a nursing school, you will need a master's degree. Some specialties, like research, require a doctorate degree. There are some diplomas that you can do in a school that can add you some additional task to your job. For example, if you want to work in vaccination, you must have a certification.
What are the dangers of being a nurse?
The big danger of being a nurse is to have poor working condition as night shift, mandatory overtime, constant stress, precarious work environment, work on weekends and many more. Many of the nurses go to a private care where they can have regular hours and stable atmosphere. It is a challenging profession and this is why the quality of a nurse is interfered.
Conclusion
Nurses are most valuable to the health of our society. They work in different fields and can change throughout their career. They work for the good of the patients. In my opinion, the variety and diversity of the field of expertise is what is most beautiful in this profession.
